FAITHOUGHTS Resurrection Pastor Klonowski In the first years after I became a pastor, I kept in touch with one of my old seminary professors. When I say old I really mean it: Joe was already in his eighties, I think, when I got to know him. He had gone blind in old age, so we made a monthly standing appointment for me to read to him, from theological journals and poetry books and such, anything I thought was worth it. He made me read him my sermons, too, which always made me nervous. It was good, though. He was the kind of guy, you just wanted to sit at his feet. Once, because he was thinking a lot about his age and the coming end of his life, he asked me to read to him First Corinthians 15, St. Paul’s great chapter on resurrection. “How are the dead raised?,” Paul writes. “With what kind of body do they come? …. God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. Not all flesh is alike, but there is one flesh for human beings, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.” “Hmph,” Joe grunted. “I know that’s supposed to be heaven, but it sure sounds to me like Brookfield Zoo.” Well, what do you think, Joe?, I asked him. When you think about the coming resurrected new life, what do you think it will be like? He kind of waved, a little impatiently. “Oh, there’s all kinds of images, streets of gold and robes of white and such, but that’s just what humans do, trying to paint pictures of things we don’t really know. “There’s only one thing about it I know for sure. I know that I’ve been an idea in the mind of God, and I always will be. I don’t need the pictures; knowing that is enough. I’ve been an idea in the mind of God.” That conversation came back to me a few days ago when I came across an essay on the topic that he wrote in those years. Aging: A Summing Up and a Letting Go, is the title. Joe writes this: In Romans, the most mature of Paul’s epistles, he says, “If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” Period! That is the fundamental and absolute word of scripture. But that word is immensely satisfying to old people. I never try to give any blueprints of eternity or heaven or eternal life, since by definition it is utterly impossible. I think instead of trying to answer all the questions about death, we ought to follow the example of Paul and the New Testament and say, “Eye has not seen nor ear heard”; “By faith we are saved.” By faith we are saved. Knowing that is really all the resurrection you need. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
