FAITHOUGHTS Serpents and Doves Stuart Kurtz You’ve probably seen the video. She’s articulate, but shy. The reporter asks her, “Was there a part of you that was like, ‘This could not happen at my school?'” She grimaces, says “No,” looks at him briefly but intensely, and continues, “It’s been happening everywhere. I’ve always felt it would eventually happen here, too.” Like her, we’re not surprised that this happens. Active shooter drills now accompany tornado and fire drills in our schools, rehearsals for what will eventually happen here, too. Jesus knew about evil. He told his disciples, “I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” In this brief passage, there is no answer to the conundrum of how there can be evil in God’s good creation. But there is wise advice and direction for us, living where evil eventually happens. Recall the Garden of Eden, where the serpent tempts the woman. The serpent offers her knowledge of good and evil. This is the wisdom of serpents. The problem with the knowledge of evil is that it often changes those who have it. What starts as righteous anger all too often ends as nothing but anger. We are tempted, not with knowledge we already have, but with the idea that fighting evil requires us to shed our innocence. Hence, Jesus’ imperative to be innocent as doves, to remain open and vulnerable in the face of evil, to not let our knowledge become our fatal weakness. But first and foremost, he sent them out, as his emissaries to God’s good creation, his witnesses to the good and evil that lives within it, bringing his healing to the wounded, his compassion to the grieving. Fellow sheep, our Shepherd sends us out too, to a wise and innocent life among the wolves. Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago.
