FAITHOUGHTS My Hero! Maria Arndt Once in a Bible study here at Faith, we discussed who were our personal faith heroes. I would love to share one of mine with you. As a third grader, I moved to Columbus, IN. This meant a new school and a new church which happened to be one and the same… St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and School. My Pastor was Eldon Brandt. Each and every Christmas, Pastor Brandt would recite Luke 2. From his heart with as much exuberance as he could muster, he would tell the age old story. His face and voice would come alive with an unmatched animation and zeal! He told us once that singing hymns was not about singing every note correctly but about praising our Savior. Therefore we should sing loudly and with gusto, which I do to this day. He could not stand the pre-fab confirmation material so he designed his own instructional binder. Never have I studied as hard as I did when I was in eighth grade and a part of his confirmation class. His lectures were all in an organized fill in the blank format that just made sense to me. I kept that binder for years. I can recall word for word the catechism verses and meanings, which has served me well. I can see the vivid imagery he would paint to better our understanding. Pastor Brandt would plan worship services that celebrated the Faith and he was a stickler for ending in an hour or less. His sermon texts and topics were planned for years in advance and his sermons were always tight and expertly delivered. One of my very favorite things that he did was the Benediction. He stood before us and his face lit up with the joy of the Lord. I can still see his countenance. I can still hear his voice starting small and building to the crescendo: “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26) I can still smile and feel the peace, joy and love that benediction sent me into the world with for the week. May you all feel the same peace, joy and love yourselves this week and always! Maria Arndt is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she works as a kindergarten teacher.
