FAITHOUGHTS Ancient Wisdom Deborah Burnet The New York Times hosted a huge conference this week in New York City called the “New Rules Summit.” The conference featured a lot of TV and sports celebrities, high profile CEOs, politicians and philanthropists, all seeking to define the “new rules of leadership for a new era…that will empower women to succeed.” I was offended. Don’t get me wrong. We do need to advance women into senior leadership ranks, across all disciplines. We will be stronger as a society when we have more folks with diverse perspectives sitting at the table, deciding together how to get things done. It was the language I objected to. To call it the “New Rules Summit” implies that we’ve simply been operating under the wrong set of rules up until now. Not that there was anything wrong with the actual behavior of (some) people in charge – however, the kind of abusive and unfair treatment we hear and read about everyday was never OK under the “old rules.” So it’s not that we simply need new rules for a new day. We are like the ancient Israelites and the early Christians whom God loved, and coaxed and led whenever they turned away from God’s vision for a new earth. As men and women leaders, we need to lean in to God’s ancient wisdom, which is calling us to become our best selves and communities: “The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.” – James 3:17 That was one of our Scripture lessons in worship last Sunday. True as it ever was. What would our government, our companies, our schools and our world look like if we embraced this ancient wisdom, and insisted on it in our leaders? Together, let’s work to build it and find out! Deb Burnet is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she serves as a physician and a medical researcher.
