FAITHOUGHTS What time is it? Stuart Kurtz In church, we’re in the second chapter of Luke. Mary and Joseph have travelled to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Kings. Our savior and Lord was born there. The angels and shepherds have come and gone. In a few days, we’ll hear the story of the twelve year old Jesus visiting the temple; and we say kids grow up fast these days! At Faith, we’ve decided to provide shelter during the cold season to homeless men. This has been a defining moment for our congregation, a conscious choice to put God’s vision and values as we understand them in the highest place. We can be proud of the quality of discussions, the fair consideration of concerns, and the preparations, that lead to this decision. But the larger world in which we live is dissonant. This is a difficult conversation, as we don’t want the divisions of our society to become a cause of division with us. Yet it is hard not to be alarmed, no matter which secular “team” we identify with. The President is under investigation. The gyrations of the stock market, and the steady increase of interest rates, are sickening. We face a crisis on our southern border. Whether this is a humanitarian crisis, or a crisis of national integrity, is a Rorschach test for our secular divisions. These divisions have hardened to the point where compromise seems nothing more than a euphemism for political capitulation. Brinkmanship, now realized in the form of a government shutdown, rules the day. So, what time is it? It is time for the values and spirit which have animated us within our congregation to be reflected in our civic engagement. It is time to bring the best of our values and spirit to where they are needed the most. Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago.
