FAITHOUGHTS The Source of Goodness Carla Benard “Grateful living is possible only when we realize that other people and agents do things for us that we cannot do for ourselves. Gratitude emerges from two stages of information processing-affirmation and recognition. We affirm the good and credit others with bringing it about. In gratitude, we recognize that the source of goodness is outside ourselves.” University of California- Davis professor of psychology, Robert Emmons I read that quote in Thanks a Thousand by A. J. Jacobs. Rabbi Ellen Dreyfus referenced that thought-provoking book to worshippers on Thanksgiving eve. Jacobs endeavors to thank everyone responsible for his morning cup of coffee & learns a bit about gratitude– from the barista at his local café, to the bean growers, from those who made the shipping crates, to those who created the paper sleeves to keep his hands cool. If an element was missing in the chain, every morning’s pleasurable experience would be changed . I’ve been thinking about needing to “affirm the good and credit others with bringing it about.” When we submit, we give up our agency and that isn’t something most of us do well. We like to think that we can achieve almost anything. But it’s not true. For example, I needed to concede that my back has been a source of concern for months and make the decision to seek help. However, I could not have read my x-rays with any accuracy. Or made rational suggestions for treatment. I needed a professional to do that for me. When I left, I sincerely thanked the doctor. I now have a plan and hope for improvement, neither of which I could have accomplished on my own. I learned about things I’d never considered. I challenge you to slow down to try this. It is an amazing exercise to realize how different our days would be without others around us. As Christians we have the ultimate example of selflessness in the service to others. We celebrated the birth of a baby sent to save the world and will begin the Lenten walk to the cross-the ultimate in sacrifice. We couldn’t have done it ourselves. Mr. Jacobs later says this: “I’m still worried about my gratitude devolving into complacency. I want to figure out if there’s a way to make my gratitude useful to people on the chain.” That works for us too- give thanks to a merciful God, then go out to share what you’ve been given.
