FAITHOUGHTS Our God who art in heaven by Sarah Cutcliffe At the end of each council meeting we say the Lord’s Prayer together. I say, “Our God who art in heaven”. I promise I know the words. I make the choice to change it because to me God isn’t my father. Almost all the language in Judeo-Christian religions refer to God as a man. Is God really a man? We acknowledge that God is most definitely NOT a human and is an entity beyond what we can understand. God is far greater than any gender or description we can imagine. We attempt to describe and explain our relationship with God in terms we do understand – a parent/child relationship is one most of us have experienced. Have you asked why we think of God as father though? Most of time men were seen as the head of a family, the breadwinners and the decision makers. We acknowledge God is all powerful and we equate God to a position of power in our world. So, God can be seen as a man. Society is changing though. Men and women should be viewed as equal in the home, at work, in government and all communities. Although I believe there is a lot of work to be done, I hope to see a time when men and women are truly acknowledged as equal. Beyond our changing society, God tells us that she/he is beyond gender. Genesis 1:27 reads, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (By the way, do you notice how the above phrase uses male pronouns twice?) God is male and female all at once so it makes sense we should acknowledge that. I charge the Church and all of us to change our language . I’m not asking you to stop calling God a man. It’s hard especially when singing hymns (I have tried). What I am asking you to do is be conscious of how to refer to God and think of God. Notice how often we use male pronouns and how often when praying you think of talking to a man. If you acknowledge God is beyond gender, start using gender-neutral pronouns or switch off between male and female pronouns. Start making people a little uncomfortable by starting the Lord’s Prayer with, “Our God who art in heaven.” Big change starts small and sometimes that is as small as one word.
