FAITHOUGHTS Good Friday by Deb Burnet After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body. Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. John 19:38-39 On Good Friday, the whole weight of the Roman Empire came crashing down upon Jesus and his followers. By all rights, the crucifixion, a public humiliation and brutal warning to others, should have extinguished the nascent Jesus movement. Pontius Pilate was the ruler of Judea, and a direct report to the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Pilate was known by historians of his time as an exceptionally cruel and capricious leader. And into this grave danger steps … Joseph of Arimathea. Before the crucifixion, Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but only in secret. The Jewish hierarchy had also demanded Jesus’ life, and they were not likely to embrace his followers. So what makes Joseph come out into the open, in this most dangerous moment? Joseph was a wealthy man; Mark tells us Joseph was “a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God.” So Joseph was an insider with status, a venerated Jewish leader. Joseph had a lot at stake. For a long time, Joseph kept his true nature hidden and he lived a life of fear, despite his high status. Then, everything crumbled out from under him. It was not his wealth or status that he lost. Much worse – as a seeker of God’s kingdom, Joseph watched as the very light of God was extinguished. Something flipped then, inside Joseph. He could no longer live in fear, hiding his true identity. Joseph went directly to the Roman authority who had just crucified Jesus – and he asked for Jesus’ body. Nicodemus, another wealthy council member and a Pharisee, also comes out into the light of day. Earlier, Nicodemus met secretly with Jesus to understand his teachings, but the cross makes the luxury of silence no longer an option. Before any empty tomb, God’s people arise.
