FAITHOUGHTS Offering as an Act of Worship Pastor Klonowski “All things are yours . . . and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” 1 Corinthians 3:21-22 I watch in our congregation every Sunday as plates are passed and gifts are shared, and then the offering is brought up to the altar. You can understand it as something that happens by simple force of habit and not notice very much, or you can watch with awareness and recognize it as a profound act of worship. Often we think of it as something you have to do to support your church. That’s unfortunate. You don’t have to do anything. All things are yours, as St. Paul writes. Grace, redemption, eternal life: all things are yours. You don’t have to do a blessed thing, because every blessed thing has been done for you already. You don’t have to make an offering, and yet I watch in our congregation every Sunday and people do. If it were only to support our church, then I suppose you could mail it in, like the check for the electric bill. But instead of putting the offering in the mail, we put it in the middle of the worship service. So we recognize that before we ever give to a need, first and foremost we give from a need, from our need to worship and honor God. Mark Allan Powell, New Testament professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, suggests that the offering is the purest form of worship imaginable. We are “expressing our love for God . . . by giving up something we value.” “I find that this is true:” he writes, “that it is easier to sing hymns and not really mean them than it is to part with my money and not really mean it.” I watch in our congregation every Sunday, and what Powell describes is exactly what happens: people part with their money, right there in the middle of worship, and they really mean it. What they really mean to say is, “Yes, all things are ours. But then again, we belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
