FAITHOUGHTS CHRISTIAN FAITH AND BASEBALL Some years ago I watched a baseball coach, one of the best coaches I know, working with his shortstop. The kid was upset because he’d booted a ground ball. “Listen to me,” said his coach, “a shortstop who doesn’t make any errors is a bad shortstop; that’s a guy who’s not testing his range. When you’re out there I want you to be pushing yourself to make a play, every chance you get. So get out there, and make me another error!” “Make me another error!” I remember it mostly because the approach was so, shall we say, unorthodox, but there’s a lot of life-truth in there, isn’t there? Baseball is a game in which you fail a lot. The classic evidence is that the very best hitters, the .300 hitters – well, hitting .300 means you are failing 70% of the time, right? You can think of Christian faith that way, too. Christian faith is always pushing us to action, testing our range. Think of the people who encounter Jesus in the gospels, or the people of the earliest Church in the book of Acts – they are always getting turned around, challenged, pushed in another direction. Think of the way faith has worked in your own life: just when you think you know what God has in store, that’s when the unexpected happens – the ball takes a bad hop! – and what God gives you is something entirely different. We try things in the church and sometimes they work and then, well, sometimes …. There’s always a certain performance anxiety about such things. If God gives me something unexpected and difficult, am I going to be able to handle it? But as my old coaching colleague was telling his shortstop, to be tentative and careful can never be our response. We’ll make mistakes as we seek to do God’s will – oh, yes, we will! But the important thing is that we will indeed be moving, pursuing, laying ourselves flat out to do what God wants. So get out there, now, and in your faith life … make another error! + Pastor Klonowski ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CROP Hunger Walk coordinator? Each year in the spring many of the faith communities in our area participate in the South Suburban CROP Hunger Walk. The Walk raises money for hunger concerns both local (Respond Now Food Pantry, South Suburban PADS, etc.) and around the world. This year’s Walk is April 28. Last year only a few of the walkers were from Faith. Are you interested in expanding our participation? We’re looking for a Hunger Walk coordinator who would attend an organizational meeting with coordinators from other faith communities (Saturday, March 23, 10am) and then distribute materials,do publicity, and work to recruit other walkers! If this is a ministry God puts on your heart, see the poster on the church office window, or contact Pastor Klonowski, pastor@faith-homewood.org, or (708) 799-1160. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This week, March 26, the preacher is Faith’s own Pastor Klonowski on “O Love, How Deep,” (ELW 322). Following worship lunch is served at 12:35; a free-will donation is received. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
