FAITHOUGHTS It Takes A Village by Sarah Cutcliffe A few months ago my daughter Wells brought me a felt pad that goes under one of our dining room chair legs. She said, “Mommy, here is communion.” It was pretty adorable. Since then both kids are very curious about taking communion at church. Recently they both have asked if they can also take communion. Inevitably they have asked me, “What is communion?” I am struggling to come up with a great answer for them. I have given them a pretty standard response that it is a symbol of God’s greatest demonstration of love and grace. That answer has produced lots of follow-ups for which I again feel ill equipped to answer. I have prayed about how to lead my children through this period of curiosity and excitement. I recently came to peace with a wonderful realization when thinking of my favorite moment we experienced during baptism. When Ole and Wells were baptized most of you stood up to say that you welcomed them into our community and that you would help us raise them in God’s love. Well, folks, this would be one of those times that they need you. One of the reasons we worship together is because we can teach each other the importance of our rituals and institutions. God reminded me that this is not solely up to Robbie and me to teach them how to walk with Jesus. Our congregation and larger Christian community are here to teach us all and help us grow. So, no pressure, but I am leaning into you for your help and guidance. I know it takes a village and your wisdom will only help Ole and Wells as they move forward in their journey with God.
