FAITHOUGHTS A Good Year for Figs Stuart Kurtz Our Sunday morning adult education is a place where we can work out the complicated relationship between scripture, faith, and our lives. We had a particularly good class a Sunday a week ago, when we considered the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree. “Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'” (Luke 13:6-9, NRSV) In a few short verses, Jesus tells a complicated but compelling story that can be used to illustrate many moral conclusions. The Lutheran in us loves the law/gospel tension between the owner and the gardener. There are other actors too: the fig tree, the subject of the owner’s impatient judgment and the gardener’s support; the soil, which the owner thinks is fine, but the gardener thinks may need a bit of help; last and least, there’s the manure, which has its own essential role to play in this little drama. One of the miracles of Jesus’ parables is the way we invest ourselves in them. Even if we think of this as no more than a story that Jesus devised to illustrate a particular moral, no matter what role we might identify with, we still find ourselves rooting for the tree, and hoping that next year will be a good year for figs. Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago.
