FAITHOUGHTS Motivated by Compassion Carla Benard . .. Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, . . . Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” Mark 10:46-51 “What do you want me to do for you?” This question could be interpreted multiple ways simply by changing the tone of voice of the speaker. Impatient, angry, disdainful, or unconcerned are all possible. Whenever Jesus says these words, he means them literally. Jesus asks the most unlikely people what they want him to do for them and then…he does it. He stops, sees them, listens, and acts. Every time. Regardless of whom the person is. Regardless of whether they are the “right” kind of people. Regardless of what the religious leaders around him have to say about any of it. Many of the leaders had a difficult time understanding that his sole motivation was compassion. What a radical way of engaging with our fellow humans! No profit concerns, no time constraints, no concerns about where my act of compassion might lead. This could get personal. And messy. I might have to acknowledge both the need AND the worth of the person doing the asking. This compassion business IS NOT for the squeamish, but let’s face it, Jesus’ example is pretty darn clear. In a world guided by compassion, we would hear & answer the cries of the homeless, the hungry, and the poor. We would welcome the stranger, the refugee, and the person who doesn’t live or love as we do. In a world guided by compassion, we would celebrate and embrace our God-created differences and work to understand them rather than living in fear of the unknown. In a world guided by compassion we would start at the point of understanding that ALL God created is good and deserving of our concern. A world guided by compassion? What a silly idea! Except we just celebrated Easter, an unquestionable display of compassion. His compassion for us took him to the cross, seems the least we could do is pay it forward.
