FAITHOUGHTS Does This Happen to You? by Stuart Kurtz It happened again to me this week. I heard someone say, “I’m a Christian, and so I believe X,” where “X” is misogynistic, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, or some combination of the above. As so often happens, I’m aware of no biblical warrants for the “X” of the day, but plenty for “not X.” It is tempting to think, “That person isn’t really Christian!” but I push those thoughts aside. That other person has claimed Jesus as their Lord, so even if they seem deeply confused to me about the rest, it’s not my place to judge. The true judge will judge us all, and I hope that Jesus will claim me, my confusions notwithstanding. Still, it seems that the only time I hear Christian voices through the media, it’s the kind of voice that says “X.” It’s easy to understand why. If you say, “I’m a Christian, and I believe Y,” where “Y” is about love and reconciliation, it’s not newsworthy. Salvation doesn’t sell papers. Healing doesn’t go viral. It’s a challenging time to be a Christian in the public sphere, not because there are non-Christian voices, but because Christians who believe “X” are taken as normative. I believe that church attendance is down nationwide because people who don’t believe “X” hear that “Christians believe X,” and so decide that Christianity isn’t for them. So when we say, “I’m a Christian,” they stop listening. They think they already know what we have to say, and they’ve already rejected it. Jesus didn’t say that Christian living would be easy. He calls us to persist in witness to him, to preach his Gospel, the Good News that the Kingdom of God is at hand, available to all who want to enter it. And in that Kingdom, we are one.
