FAITHOUGHTS 1-2-3, Let’s Pick Corn Sarah Cutcliffe When my grandpa was a toddler he was asked to say the family prayer for dinner. Without hesitation he bowed his head and said, “1-2-3, let’s pick corn.” This adorable story has become family lore. When my kids and niece and nephew began speaking my dad immediate taught them to recite the family prayer. Now the kids insist on including it in our prayer after the more traditional “God is great” grace. On a good night I initiate prayer before dinner. Good nights seem to be few and far between right now. With all the commotion of raising toddlers, working full time, running a home, and trying to be the best mother, daughter, sister and friend possible I am forgetting to focus on the little things. Things like prayer before dinner, worship, bible study, and other daily reminders of God’s presence and our relationship often are replaced with rushing out the door, work, bath time, brushing teeth, several bedtime stories and laundry (SO MUCH LAUNDRY). I have been feeling uncomfortable that I am not doing more to fill my house with God’s love. I recently carved out time to reflect on this and asked God for help to make our house and daily activities more centered on faith. Soon after my conversation with God about this my kids started insisting on saying grace at every meal and often multiple times throughout the meal. Wells grabs my hand and asks, “God is great?” until we all say the prayer. Ole rushes to shout, “1-2-3, let’s pick corn!” at the end. At first I thought it was sweet and typical behavior of toddlers enamored with a new activity. I soon realized that this was one of my reminders from God to include faith throughout our daily life. Although I am not surprised, I am in awe of how beautifully and quickly God can sometimes answer our prayers. God’s support and love are around and I need to rely on it more. As I learn to do that I will keep chiming in with my kiddos in a joyful chorus of before-meal prayer. Sarah Cutcliffe is a member of Faith.
