FAITHOUGHTS A Little Soreness…a Lot of Gain Carla Benard I’ve worked out regularly the past 2 ½ years, but I still have sore muscles after each session. When I first started working out, I had the mistaken belief that at some point the soreness stopped. I was wrong. The longer you work out, the heavier and more intense the workouts become, so you are sore every time. But the soreness means that you have challenged those muscles, and the more you work out the less time it seems to take for the soreness to go away. I’m going to keep working out, so I anticipate that there will always be a little soreness in those muscles as I continue to challenge them. Our current Bible study – “Growing In Faith Together!” GIFT! – represents a new kind of “workout” at Faith. The first class introduced us to the term radical disciple, defining radical as: relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something; far-reaching or thorough. So, to be a radical disciple is an intense workout of the spiritual kind, and the Gospel of Matthew lays out all the expectations in clear and specific detail. Basically, it’s the concept of making a total and unquestioning commitment to follow Jesus when he calls, just as we see the first disciples do when he calls them. Our class’s conversation was especially interesting when we explored what continues to hold us back from making this fundamental change. One would think that with the examples of centuries of early Christians to draw upon we would know the way to effect this change and move forward as radical disciples for Jesus. But clearly that is not the case, though not for lack of trying! Each of us in the class had something-either personal, cultural, or as a result of our lifestyles that kept us from being able to claim the title. But, it came to me as I thought about this piece-this is very much like the weight-lifting that I do. Our spiritual muscles sometimes become flabby. We stop at; “I believe that Jesus is the Risen Lord and that I am redeemed by virtue of his sacrifice.” But that statement is merely the beginning. It’s like me acknowledging that my heart condition exists but not integrating changes into my life and expecting to be healthy and strong. Our spiritual muscles must also be challenged regularly in order to become healthy and vibrant. That willmean doing some things we really don’t want to do and that might very well cause us some discomfort. It will mean relating to others differently. It will mean feeling sore and hurting some days. That’s ok. The muscles will begin to get stronger, and each time we use them it will be just a bit easier. But, let’s keep working out. Expect a little soreness in those spiritual muscles as they are challenged. But take heart, it gets easier and the rewards are well worth the effort. Carla Benard is a member of Faith.
