FAITHOUGHTS Seeking Justice Together Sarah Cutcliffe I have always really loved celebrating the 4th of July. I am a huge history nerd and I get very sentimental thinking of our “Great American Experiment”. However, this year, I am struggling to celebrate because of where we are at as a nation in this moment. The forefathers understood violence and upheaval but I think they hoped we could have resolved some of the reasons for discord by now. Some of you reading may be uncomfortable at discussing politics in this forum. I understand the desire to avoid talking about politics at church. We love and respect the people we worship with and share an intimate bond as Faith attendees. Politics is a hot-button issue and can quickly bring to light major disagreements between us. Confrontation can escalate and create tension. It feels better to experience love and joy together than to discord. However, God’s calls us to be political. Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Our governments make policies, laws, and systems that are supposed to care for the individual and collective well-being of all. Since we are charged to care for others by God we are therefore called to invest in how our local and state governments operate. The issues that our governments are dealing with are complex. Solving today’s high stakes problems of inequality and intersectionaility will take tremendous effort from all of us. God has called us to be part of the solution and working together with our congregation is an important place to start. Speaking with people that we respect about critical topics such as immigration, police brutality, and gun-control help us to formulate our own ideas by understanding all sides. Talking about this with our fellow Faith attendees will also help us put God at the center of our thoughts and actions. Discourse concerning our problems is the first step to fixing them. Although we will disagree, conversations within our congregation will help build a foundation for us to go out be disciples of God by serving by those who need our love. I have faith that we can be part of a movement that truly does right, seeks justice and defends the oppressed. Sarah Cutcliffe is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she develops medical records systems at the University of Chicago. Death of Connie Sandstrom Connie Sandstrom of our congregation died on Saturday, June 30. Physically limited in some ways due to a long and valiant struggle with Huntington’s disease, she was known among us lately as “the lady in the wheelchair on the pulpit side.” She was also known among us as “the lady who blesses everyone when we pass the peace.” She was a person of deep, deep Christian faith. A memorial service will be planned, probably in September. Notes and prayers for the family can be sent to 2922 Alexander Court, Flossmoor, 60422. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
