FAITHOUGHTS Big Picture Christina Petrovic I had a friend who would religiously apply sunscreen to the tips of her ears. She had read an article that said that skin cancer had been occurring more frequently on the ears because it was a spot that so many people missed during their sunscreen application. The problem was that she didn’t apply sunscreen anywhere else. My Great Aunt Dolly was sick with emphysema and when we would come to visit, she would take her oxygen tube out of her nose and put it nicely to the side while she lit up a cigarette and had a smoke. When my husband and I joined the Lutheran Church after being born and raised as Catholics, we struggled terribly. Upset family members, curious questions, angst about whether we were doing the right thing. After 35 years of being Catholic, could we live the same life as Lutherans? There is one thing that all of these stories have in common…everyone missed the point. While applying sunscreen to your ears is good practice, you leave the rest of your body unprotected. Smoking next to a steady stream of oxygen could kill everyone in the room. Being Lutheran over Catholic, doesn’t have the power to change my faith. We all missed the point! What else are we all missing? There are big things glaring us in the face daily that we simply miss while trying to see clearly. Perhaps looking at the little picture instead of the big picture is where our troubles lie. Examining the details can cloud our vision. We all could use some help putting things into focus. Take a step back and look again. Sometimes something as simple as a prayer for clarity can make things just as clear as a windshield wiper on a rainy day. Respond Now need of the month: socks and underwear Respond Now is the emergency social service agency that serves our area. They’re always in need of personal hygiene items and non- perishable food items. This month they’re especially looking for socks and underwear (still in packages,especially for children). Summer Hospitality Table Feel free to drop off packaged cookies to the table to be used for summer Sunday treats. Sign up sheets are on the office windows to bring and serve treats any Sunday.
