FAITHOUGHTS Summer Travels by Stuart Kurtz One of my strongest memories of childhood are trips to visit family. My mom and dad both grew up in Pennsylvania, but from different parts of the state. They met, as many couples do, at college. So even when we lived near my father’s parents, his sister, and her family, there were regular trips to the farm, to visit my mother’s parents, her siblings, and their families. I’d spend a glorious week there every summer, immersed in the companionship of my farm cousins. I don’t get to see them often these days, but when I do, fifty years fall away in an instant. We still travel during the summer to visit family, but more often than not, it’s to visit our daughter and her family in Colorado. I just got back a few days ago from a visit there, and Kim, who is pulling Grandma duty, is still there. But our life has changed in the past year, as my parents have moved close to us. Now, when my siblings visit them, they visit us too. It’s nice to have the family back together again, if only for a few days around special events. I see this same dynamic playing out in the lives of my friends. We belong to many communities- not just the town or region in which we live, but our congregation, and even congregations to which we once belonged. To our friends, our family. We don’t always get to see the people we love as often as we wish, but we keep the relationships alive despite distance. We write, we talk on the phone, we travel when we can, often far from where we live, sometimes to places we’ve never lived, and yet in doing so, experience the joy of coming home. Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago. Blessing of work campers Four high school students and three adult leaders head out next week to Pennsylvania to help rebuild after storms last year. They’ve been hard at work planning and preparing all year. Please help send them with a blessing in worship this Sunday, July 22 and keep them in prayer as they travel, work, and learn. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sharon Stancik Sharon Stancik of our congregation would like visitors! Having broken her arm in a fall and dealing with some other health issues, Sharon is in room 500 at Manor Care, 940 Maple Ave in Homewood. She’s bored to tears and would welcome company to help pass the time. Call before you go, (708) 897-1623, to be sure she’s not at a physical therapy session. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
