FAITHOUGHTS Love One Another Deborah Burnet “Love is patient and kind…” 1 Cor 13:4 “Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.” Rom 12:10 Easier said than done! Fortunately, God gives us grace to become like Christ, who loves, honors and serves all. Love in these passages is not the flame of romance. It’s love borne out of deep familiarity, like the affection you have for your old dog, or the family bond that persists despite squabbles and differences. Honor is about building someone up – treating them as if they are worthy, calling out their best selves. God gives us training grounds where we can learn to love and honor. First – our workplace. Many people work at the same place for several years. You get to know folks there. Do you love everyone where you work? Usually not by a long shot! But remember – this is God’s love we’re talking about. That co-worker who always waits for others to finish the job first? Can you find something that you do love in her? What’s she really good at? Do you ever tell her about what you do love and admire? Marriage makes serious space for learning and growing in love. Generally, this is more about changing myself, than about changing my partner. Learning patience takes time! When you spend a long time with someone and know them really well, that’s when you can begin to truly honor and call out their best self, in love. Church is another training ground. Just like at work, there may be folks there you just love, and others, not so much! But again, God’s love is bigger than our human likes and dislikes, and we are all God’s children, regardless of background, politics, age, gender, or which baseball team we follow. Being part of the church community gives us time and space to grow in love, to learn to honor others. I am blessed this summer to be studying scripture with so many of you, whom I am learning to love. Deb Burnet is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she serves as a physician and a medical researcher. Summer PADS ministry: Monday, July 30 was our second summer PADS dinner at St. Lawrence O’Toole. Karen Aronson, Lacey Falvo and Lee Brauer chopped, cooked, baked, scooped & served a simple, delicious meal to 25 guests. Menu included: rice, salad, baked chicken, baked beans, watermelon (the best this season) and ice cream (vanilla and chocolate). The night’s favorite was ice cream! If you would like to join the fun in serving these wonderful souls, or would like to donate food, please contact Lee Brauer at 708-769-3432. The menu will remain the same for the August 27th meal. We cook at the church at 5:30 pm, head over to Matteson at 6:30 and serve from 7:15 to 7:45 pm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
