FAITHOUGHTS Refreshed and Renewed Carla Benard My husband and I vacationed in Door County, WI recently. A solid week of doing only what we wanted to do in lovely surroundings. We eschewed TV, the Internet for the most part, and newspapers for a week. It was wonderful. Someone else took care of the gardening, the cooking, cleaning up…bliss. But, vacations end. When we returned the first thing I noticed at home was my languishing flowerpots: dried up and withered from lack of water for a week. And the overgrown grass. And the bills that had arrived. And…well, you get it. The vacation was wonderful, but nothing actually stopped while I was gone and now it was time to give all those various and sundry pieces of my life the attention they needed and deserved. It seems as though church life experiences the same phenomenon. Activity reaches a peak at Easter and then summer follows fast behind and often we take a vacation. It’s easy to sleep in on a lovely Sunday morning. The kids are out of school and schedules are relaxed. We like to play hooky. And really, we’ll get back to it as soon as everything gets started again…. The Disciple Classes (G.I.F.T.) read a lot this summer about the first disciples and their lives after the resurrection. They were busy! Growing the church was clearly a full-time responsibility and they took it seriously. It was hard work, and it was often dangerous. As we read their stories, we were asked to reflect on ways that our church families are working to spread the word and grow God’s church here on Earth. We have had to reflect on our personal role in this never-ending story of faith and commitment to Jesus and spreading the good news. It is a sobering task. Hopefully you have had a chance to renew yourself this summer. But while you were gone, nothing stopped. The work of building and maintaining God’s church continues. Like the disciples, we have a lot of hard work to do, but the fact that we have each other to lean on as we do His work is a great blessing. So, get ready. We won’t ask you to travel the world as those early church builders did, but we will ask you to help. Can you teach? Can you sing? Can you serve in worship? Can you…well you get it, right? It’s time to water where it’s needed, trim back the overgrowth, catch up with all that needs doing. And when you’re a bit done in, refresh yourself at the well of living water. Trust me, it never goes dry. Peace Carla Benard is a member of Faith. After a career as a high school English teacher she is now enjoying retirement.
