FAITHOUGHTS Of Stars and the Ways of God Pastor Klonowski It’s not often that one of our Homewood neighbors makes international news. I write, however, on the day NASA launches the Parker Solar Probe. It’s the first NASA mission to be named after a living human being; we’ve had Galileo missions and Kepler missions before, but those are guys who’ve been gone a few hundred years. The Parker is named after Eugene Parker, of Pine Road, in Homewood. In case you have thrown away your back issues of the Astrophysical Journal, Dr. Parker published a paper there in 1958 titled “Dynamics of the Interplanetary Gas and Magnetic Fields.” Before his paper people thought of the space between the sun and its planets to be basically a void. Parker had been studying some astrophysical phenomena – like, why do the tails of comets always point away from the sun? – and, according to NASA’s layperson’s explanation of the probe, “Parker proposed a number of concepts about how stars – including our Sun – give off energy. He called this cascade of energy the solar wind, and he described an entire complex system of plasmas, magnetic fields, and energetic particles that make up this phenomenon.” You don’t have to look for the sun’s corona 93 million miles away, Parker said; actually, here on earth you’re living in it. The idea was so mind-bending that the first scientific journal to which it was submitted rejected it out of hand. Their two astrophysics reviewers said it couldn’t possibly be right, and one of them was actually insulting: “We recommend that the author go to the library and read up on the subject before he attempts to write papers about it.” Parker persevered: “The math was based on Isaac Newton, and in my experience Newton was always right.” Four years later, in 1962, NASA launched a robotic voyage to Venus and included a couple of instruments to measure the possibility of solar wind. Newton was indeed right, and so was Dr. Parker. The human understanding of how stars work was changed forever. My favorite part of the story? Dr. Nicola Fox, lead scientist on the Parker Probe that launched this morning, insisted on bringing the man himself down to Cape Canaveral for the big event. “It’s like meeting Brad Pitt or somebody,” she practically hyperventilated. “He discovered the solar wind. He’s kind of the father of heliophysics. … He’s this mythical person that did all this unbelievable science, and then you meet him, and he’s just a lovely man.” Well, hey, Dr. Fox, we coulda told you that. Just another good guy from Homewood. Parker told the project engineers it was they who’d done all the heavy lifting, designing the instruments for the probe and thus giving shape and reality to all his equations. “You guys are the really clever ones. I just wrote a paper.” To which Dr. Fox responded, “Yeah, it’s a pretty good paper, Gene.” Last spring Faith’s high school group invited me into their Sunday class for a few sessions, to present on faith and science. Sometimes the way science is presented to them, and sometimes the way religious faith is presented in our society, make it seem like one contradicts the other. I’ve never understood that. You read a story about Eugene Parker, about the magnificent scope and complexity of stars, and about the startling creativity of the human mind, and what can you do except repeat the Bible words that were once transmitted as the first public demonstration of a new scientific instrument called the telegraph: “What hath God wrought!” (Numbers 23:23) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
