FAITHOUGHTS New Beginnings Stuart Kurtz I’m in the midst of big changes in my life. I won’t explain them all, but a couple of them have come at work. I’m at an age where I was doing end-of-career planning. When would I retire? What would I do with the few years between now and then? Who could I recruit to take on my responsibilities? Then, I was offered an unexpected opportunity to take on a major role in the college. I didn’t expect it or want it. The fancy new titles would be affirming, but the new duties would derail the plans I’d made. It did take a few weeks, but I was convinced of what to do: it’s a job that matters, and I am suited to do it. I’ve taken on those new responsibilities with the new relationships and meetings they entail. Old plans have been set aside. It’s a new beginning. Just a few weeks ago, my department moved from an historic 19th century physics laboratory on the main quadrangle of the University to newly renovated space in a modern building on the science quad. Before we were spread out, with few meeting areas outside of our offices. We are now on two (big!) floors of a single building, with fifteen(!) conference rooms of various sizes, and with large informal collaboration spaces throughout. The undergraduates haven’t arrived, but the change is palpable, almost intoxicating. As one of my colleagues said, “The party’s over here!” Our old way of working in isolation has been set aside. It’s a new beginning. The old retirement date is scrubbed. My calendar is suddenly full. And it’s my chairperson’s responsibility to figure out who will replace me in my old departmental roles. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. (Ps 46:1-3, RSV) Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago, although it sounds like that’s changing, doesn’t it? He’s at stuart@cs.uchicago.edu [mailto:stuart@cs.uchicago.edu]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
