FAITHOUGHTS Let’s Grow This! Carla Benard Summer, nature’s growing season, has ended. My tomatoes are offering their last fruits, my flowers have faded, and even the grass seems to have gone dormant. We’ve had quite a summer growing season at Faith: VBS, G.I.F.T., work camp, the official beginning of Pastor Amy’s ministry among us. We thank God for such abundance. Now we head into fall…brilliant colors and gorgeous weather, and the harbinger of a supposed period of dormancy. We don’t expect growth in the coming months, but that will not be the case at Faith,. Homewood. Fall signals many new beginnings and chances for growth among us: Sunday School, choir, a new G.I.F.T. class, and confirmation classes just to name a few; lots will be growing at Faith during the coming months. On our fall trip to the Colorado mountains , our guide provided two facts about the aspen trees that grow abundantly in that region: first, their bark is fire proof; second, the aspen tree is one of the largest organisms on the planet. That second fact is a result of aspens sending out roots that go wide and long, with new trees sprouting all along their length. Aspens grow abundantly in the mountains of Colorado; each tree resilient in its own right, but each tree also dependent to some degree on every other tree. Fall is when we think of stewardship and God-inspired growth here at Faith. In that spirit, the stewardship committee has adopted the theme Let’s Grow It! for our 2018 campaign. Every Sunday, as part of offering, we assert that: “we give, because we are grateful.” The questions any outsider might ask are: “Grateful for what?” or, “How much of a response is enough?” Scripture provides clear answers: we are grateful for the grace of a totally loving God, and honestly, nothing we give can ever be “enough.” The first disciples knew that, but instead of being overwhelmed, they did exactly what they, and we, have been instructed to do: they grew the church. They gave all that they had. They planted seeds far and wide so that all might become disciples and share in the bounty. What are your dreams for Faith? Where do you see God moving us in the coming year? What are you willing and/or able to do to make it happen? So, let’s grow this at Faith. Let’s all be nurtured and fed by God’s abundant grace. Let’s all look for opportunities to send out roots from which new growth will sprout. Let’s all develop a fire proof shield against those things that keep us from becoming true disciples. Let’s learn to depend on those around us for our growth, and also to lend our strength to those who might be newly planted. Let’s become as abundant and beautiful as the aspens in the Colorado mountains. Carla Benard is a member of Faith. After a career as a high school English teacher she is now enjoying retirement. Kids Feeding Kids: Children in Sunday school have the opportunity to help feed kids who don’t have enough. Each Sunday throughput October, students may bring in coins or paper bills to share. Lorene Dudle, one of our teachers, heads up this effort. This is our first service project for the year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
