FAITHOUGHTS A Commandment to Keep Pastor Klonowski “You shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.” – Leviticus 19:34 In the Saturday morning Bible study we’ve been reading from the first books of the Old Testament and that formula – you shall not oppress, you shall not wrong the alien, the sojourner, the refugee … because you were that yourself back in the land of Egypt – occurs over and over again in Exodus and Leviticus. The motive of the murderer in Pittsburgh was more than anti-Semitism. “HIAS likes to bring invaders in [to the US]” is what he posted, just hours before the massacre, to explain why he did this. HIAS is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the counterpart to our own Lutheran Immigrant and Refugee Services. Its history goes back to the 19th century, but I remember its heyday in the 1980’s when tens of thousands fled anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. Every synagogue in the US, it seemed, had a “Save Soviet Jewry” sign out front, rallying Jewish communities to sponsor refugees from the violence and oppression. HIAS came to a crossroads of sorts some twenty years later, when it was no longer Jews who sought resettlement but victims of wars in East Asia, children fleeing gang violence in Central America, and – most of all – refugees from the wars in the Middle East. Muslims. There was pushback from some in the Jewish community about sponsoring Muslims. The HIAS president uncorked this great response, I remember: “We help, not because they are Jewish, but because we are Jewish.” HIAS, one Jewish writer has defiantly proclaimed after the Pittsburgh killings, is Judaism at its best. Tuesday evening hundreds of Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, and Jews got together at our Homewood synagogue for an Interfaith Gathering of Lament and Healing. It was the most inspiring and, yes, the most healing thing I’ve known in a long time. The Southland communities of faith, at their best. We are in a season now when cynical and venal national leaders use immigration and refugee issues as a political dog-whistle, calling us to our worst self. The murderer in Pittsburgh was answering that whistle. Our self, at our very worst. We don’t listen to that whistle. We listen to what God says in Exodus and Leviticus. We listen to the voices of imams and rabbis and pastors and nuns, reading scriptures and preaching God’s word of lament and prophecy, healing and justice. We listen to the voices of God’s people on Tuesday night, raised in bold resistance: “Our faith will live, the weak be strong/We’ll stand before the Lord of Song/with nothing on our tongue but, Hallelujah!” America, at its very best. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
