FAITHOUGHTS The American Creed Lutherans are a creedal people. We express our faith through familiar formulas, like the Apostle’s Creed & the Nicene Creed. We think of them as symbols of our unity in Christ. Americans are a creedal people too, though we don’t think of ourselves that way. But consider this: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” That’s an American Creed, a symbol of unity and identity, of us as Americans, in a way that’s distinct from but complementary to our Christian unity and identity. Paradoxically, these creeds of unity are products of divided times, times like these current days. There are people who do not believe as we do, that we are all children of God, or that we should all be equal under the law. This paradox results in an asymmetric rhetoric: while we hold that those who believe otherwise are children of God, just as we are, and that the law constrains and protects them, just as it constrains and protects us, they’re not obligated to believe this of us. They tempt us to despise them, because if we do so, we abandon our beliefs & make common cause with them. So what do we do? We remember our faith and our ideals. We remember that while all people are equal, not all ideas are. We support and protect the wounded and sick, the widow, the orphan, the immigrant in our midst. We stand together. We even invite our opponents to join us, and to enjoy the blessings of life in faith and community, but we cannot make them come. We pray that hearts hardened to the word of God, and some of the best words of people, will be softened. Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. Consecration Sunday This Sunday, November 11, is Faith’s Consecration Sunday. Each of our worship services will end with a time of prayerful commitment, in which we are invited to consider and make a financial pledge for the coming year to the Lord’s ministry that we share at Faith. THEN, at noon in the gym, come for our Consecration Sunday Lunch. All are invited! Students, it’s a busy Sunday! Sunday school parents & students, it’s our last Sunday for Kids Feeding Kids. Bring money or non-perishable food. Which class will raise the most? Pastor Amy has a surprise for that class. Also, drawings for Advent bulletins are due. We can’t wait to see what you’ve made. High schoolers, you’re cooking and serving for PADS. Community Thanksgiving Service The Southland community gathers for Thanksgiving worship on Wednesday, November 21, 7:30p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor. Sponsored by the South Suburban Interfaith Ministerial Association, this service includes participation from Jewish, Protestant, Muslim, and Catholic faith traditions. A highlight is the voices of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Viking Choir! This year’s preacher is Pastor Chris Wogaman of Trinity Lutheran Church in Park Forest. An offering will be taken to support the work of Respond Now, our community’s emergency social service provider.
