FAITHOUGHTS Please and Thank You Pastor Amy Wiegert Please and thank you are “magic words” we teach children. As in, “say please when you ask for something and say thank you when you receive it.” My friend, Heather, recounts an encounter with a little girl she nannied for. The little one asked for yet another story to be read. When Heather told her, no, it was bed time, the little girl screamed at the top of her lungs, “BUT I SAID PLEASE!!” A reminder that just because we ask doesn’t mean we get. I sometimes forget to say thank you. When I get frustrated with drivers who don’t use turn signals. When I’m short tempered with my family for not putting dirty socks in laundry baskets. When the person in front of me at the check lane has 100 coupons and 3 forms of payment. You see where I’m going. That’s really more about me and my thanks-giving-ness than it is about others. But as we finish up November, I’m reminded to say please and thank you. The fall colors are beautiful, it’s not the rush of the start of school nor the Christmas overwhelm. It’s like a deep breath. A deep breath of thankfulness. I’m reminded this year especially, since our wedding anniversary falls on Thanksgiving Day, that we intentionally got married around Thanksgiving. Because we are thankful for all of it: the ups and downs, the challenges and the successes. As we come off of an amazing Consecration Sunday, I continue to give thanks to work & now live alongside you. Thankful is the way we can try to live as as children of God, as friend, as family member, as south suburbanites, as Americans. It may seem that living a thankful life doesn’t make much difference, but it does. To paraphrase writer Anne Lamott, “if your prayer is ‘help and thanks’ , that is enough.” What can you do today, tomorrow, this week, to say thank you? Show it, say it, write it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
