FAITHOUGHTS Giving Thanks Deb Burnet Today is Thanksgiving, when we give thanks for the earth’s bounty. While it’s a national holiday, Thanksgiving is rooted in religious tradition. God created the earth and all that is in it. When we praise God’s works we do God’s will, and we are blessed. There’s a science behind thanksgiving. When we take time to notice and give thanks for things around us, we are changed. We experience a lift in mood and more energy. We treat others with more kindness and compassion. We sleep better and we have stronger immune systems. It’s not as simple as it sounds. Giving thanks is actually quite counter-cultural. Think about it – Giving thanks is all about valuing what you have, whereas every TV commercial ever made aims at making you want what you don’t have. So giving thanks is God’s will, but it’s also counter-cultural. This means that giving thanks doesn’t just come naturally to us in our society, even though we were built that way by God. How can we recover and express our God-given grateful nature? There is good news: the science of thanksgiving teaches us how to build gratitude. It’s a discipline, just like learning to play piano or working out. Find a way to make giving thanks a regular habit – maybe while you are riding the train to or from work, or walking the dog. Set aside a time each day to reflect on what you are grateful to God for, and be specific. Recall a particular interaction during your day, or something you’ve not noticed before. Journaling what you are grateful for is another way to bring gratitude front and center. Express your gratitude to others – write a thank you letter to someone. It’s not really that mysterious after all – the road map for thanksgiving is right in front of us. Try out Colossians, or many of the Psalms. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” Psalm 28:7 Deb Burnet is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she serves as a physician and a medical researcher. “Let’s Grow This!”: Bringing Forward Our Gifts Two weeks ago, November 11, was Faith’s “Consecration Sunday.” As part of our worship we brought forward our pledge cards for 2019 to the altar. A pledge is your own personal plan for supporting the ministry of the church in the coming year, an estimate of what you plan to give in 2019. We bring it to the altar during the offering because your financial support isn’t like membership dues. It’s offering: what you give to make God’s grace and peace known in the world. It’s part of your work to build a world that reflects the kingdom of God! It was great: “Let’s Grow This!,” we said, and we received pledges from 70 households, and 46 of those indicated an increase, to help make ministry happen! Did you miss it? Why, yes!, you CAN still participate! Pick up a pledge card at the ushers’ table, just outside the sanctuary. Or contact the church office, secretary@faithhomewood.org [mailto:secretary@faithhomewood.org]. You can drop the card into the offering, or mail in to the church office. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Congregation meeting Sunday, December 9 Following our worship services on Sunday, December 9, Faith’s Council has called a congregation meeting at 12 noon. Plan to be there, to consider two important things for our community:
* To undertake a capital appeal in 2019 in the spring, for a new roof (including payment of a $25,000 deposit toward the roof contract), a new sign, window and other capital repairs, to be tithed (10%). * That Faith become a PADS site in early 2019 conditioned on enrolling appropriate volunteer, non-pastoral, congregational leadership ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
