FAITHOUGHTS Advent in Action by Sarah Cutcliffe Advent is my favorite church season. Preparing for the love and grace of Christmas is magical. In the Advent scripture, I love the theme of God’s communication with us. God tells us to watch how his plans fall in place and each year we are reminded that God executes like no other. Never in my life have I experienced God’s powerful and clear communication as I have in the past weeks. As a church we were asked to become a PADS site, to rotate with other congregations hosting homeless folk overnight, providing meals and shelter. The congregation quickly took the question to heart and put into motion the necessary steps to review, analyze, acknowledge and decide. I don’t know if Faith Lutheran has ever moved as quickly on making a major decision. We moved this question with urgency and I believe that God put the pieces in place for us to do so. We understood that having a dedicated individual or group to coordinate this effort would be critical in the success of opening a shelter. I prayed HARD about this. Then Carla and Dennis Benard stepped forward and took on the call to coordinate. Carla and Dennis, you were truly an answer to some serious prayers. I felt that God said, “If you open your heart I will give you the people you need.” On December 9 we unanimously voted to move forward as a PADS emergency shelter site. The Holy Spirit was present in that room when we resoundingly said, “Yes” to opening our home to those that need it. Instead of simply reveling in that beautiful moment, our congregation went to work to host Christmas Eve for PADS since it falls on “our” Monday night. I was overwhelmed when I saw how many volunteer spots had already been claimed by the second service this past Sunday. God showed us that if we open our home then we will find the resources we need to serve others. God has told us over and over this Advent that if we prepare for Christ and live as God’s light in the world then God will provide. What an incredible lesson to experience. Thanks be to God and to all of you for this momentous season. Happy Advent! Sarah Cutcliffe is a member of Faith.
