FAITHOUGHTS Happy New Year! It’s a common US ritual to make New Year’s resolutions. Popular resolutions often involve health (get more sleep, eat healthier, and exercise more) and financial status (earn more money, get a better job). It’s also a common US ritual to, well, break those resolutions. In 2013, Forbes said just 8% of Americans kept their resolutions. Jesus gives us a new start every day. Thankfully, we do not have to wait for the turn of the calendar page, a new month, a new year. We cannot do it ourselves. I’m thankful to be reminded of Martin Luther’s teaching about baptism- it is new every day, and that while you wash your face each morning, remember your baptism. In the waters of baptism, we are made brand new, a visible sign of God’s grace. With God’s help, we can work toward new things, new relationships. With God’s insight, we’re given new dreams, new ideas, new inspiration, and a new imagination. “Just then a religion scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus. ‘Teacher, what do I need to do to get eternal life?’ Jesus answered, ‘What is written in God’s law?’ He said, ‘That you love the Lord your God with all of your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence- and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.’ Jesus said, ‘Good answer! Do it and you will live.’ (Luke 10: 25-27, The Message) Here’s to a fabulous 2019 !
