FAITHOUGHTS All Are Welcome by Stuart Kurtz Carla Benard observed in adult education class a couple of Sundays ago that people dress more casually for church than they did a generation ago. There was no judgment in Carla’s claim – she wasn’t arguing that it was better to be dressed up, or not dressed up, just that most people don’t get as dressed up for church as they used to. It’s certainly true in my case. The old idea that we should wear our best clothes to worship has a firm grounding in scripture, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also [Matt 6:21 & Luke 12:34].” Wearing our best clothes was a visible way of indicating that our treasure, our heart, was in worshiping our Lord, Jesus Christ. No-one errs in wearing nice clothes to church, so long as it’s the Lord they honor. But we did err, a generation ago, in the expectation that everyone would, or indeed, could. These days, we’re attuned to hospitality, and know that a mono-culture, even a mono-culture of dress, can send a message to those who are different (whether by choice or necessity) that they don’t belong. These days, whether a person comes into worship dressed up, wearing jeans, or in business casual, they’ll likely see someone else dressed much as they are. It’s one fewer barrier between those whom the Lord invites and the table to which he’s invited them. As the song says, “Let this house proclaim, from floor to rafter, all are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.” Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago.
