FAITHOUGHTS Celebrating Black History Pastor Amy Wiegert Here we are, smack dab in the middle of February. I don’t know how the shortest month can feel like the longest, but it can. I’m helped along by Black History month, activities, learnings, and the joy of that celebration. Black History month is really for folks who aren’t Black, to learn and celebrate the width & breadth of a culture, a people. It’s this time of year our family starts getting ready to celebrate Ghana’s Independence Day, March 6. We enjoy Ghana’s culture, language, and music all year long but give it a special emphasis at the holiday. As a white woman raising Black kids, I take care to appreciate but not appropriate cultures other than mine. I have to take care that our kids learn Black culture not just white culture. For me, that means taking sure all kids get to learn Black culture, too. I love that our musicians included Lift Every Voice this past Sunday, an important song in Black history. What I’ve learned over the years is that I’m more interested in my culture (mostly German). In part, I owe that to learning about cultures other than mine. I’ll be away from church a few days in March, gathering with a national Lutheran group, European Descent Lutheran Association for Racial Justice. We do this work because we believe God isn’t done yet, and the church isn’t done yet. Unless and until the church makes room for every voice to be heard, the church misses out on a great many gifts and talents and understandings of God’s world. But the work is not just in that group, for those days. It continues to be all of us. In our work, school, church. With our neighbors, acquaintances, and those we haven’t met yet. Lenten Bible Study Please join us for our next adult Bible Study. Titled “Beyond Question,” it will take place during all the Saturdays of the Lenten Season: March 9, 2019 through April 20,2019.
