FAITHOUGHTS Random Acts of Kindness by Deb Burnet The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Psalms 145 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Luke 6 I think my job now, and my station in life, is to practice kindness. As in, ‘practicing yoga,’ – I mean, my job is to both work at doing it, and to work at getting better at it. I expect this is always our job as Christians, and that I have just become more aware of the need and the opportunities lately. Did you know kindness is contagious? My colleague Dr. Nick Christakis studies the epidemiology of emotions. In following research participants over decades, he finds that if you start to become happier with your life, your friend living close by has a 25 percent higher chance of becoming happy too. And your partner is likely to feel better as well. I heard an outrageous story on NPR this morning. The actor Patton Oswalt received a hate-filled tweet due to his political leanings. The sender, Michael Beatty, wrote, “I enjoyed seeing your character in [the movie] Blade:Trinity die so horribly.” Oswalt was curious about what was behind such a vindictive message. He did a little internet research and discovered that Beatty was a Viet Nam vet who was down on his luck and in debt due to high medical bills. Oswalt donated $2000 toward his bills and encouraged his own followers to do likewise; Beatty ended up with $50,000 to support his medical care. He says the experience has completely changed him – he used to feel filled with rage, but now he looks for opportunities to express kindness to others. We hear of ‘random acts of kindness.’ Maybe they’re not so random after all. God puts us in places and in relationships that give us opportunities, and then God calls us to practice kindness. Lenten Bible Study Please join us for our next adult Bible Study. Titled “Beyond Question,” it will take place during all the Saturdays of the Lenten Season: March 9, 2019 through April 20,2019.
