FAITHOUGHTS Try Something New! by Deborah Burnet Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth – do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:19
June is my favorite month. It’s full of new beginnings – graduations, weddings (and my birthday!) Everything is green – new growth abounds.
Did you know that learning a new thing is good for you?
Henry Ford said ‘Anyone who keeps learning stays young,’ and he was right. Researchers studied older people who undertook learning new skills. Both physical and mental challenges significantly improved their brain function. So taking up a new sport (yoga?) or a new activity (learning Spanish?) can be equally beneficial. This is not just the same as ‘staying active,’ – this means wrestling with a new discipline as a novice. Especially as we get older, we like to be experts. We don’t like to go back to square one as a beginner. But that’s what keeps our brains young and healthy.
We are created in God’s image. God has created us to learn, grow and stretch, and does not intend us to stop when we turn 18 (or 65, or … ). Think about it – God called Abraham when he was 75 years old – he told him to leave his home where he had established a large household. He told him to go out and explore a new land, and found a new nation. So Abraham went. He stepped out in faith and he tried something new – and we are his offspring.
This summer, try learning one new thing! Deb Burnet is a member of Faith and a medical researcher in her daily ministry.
