FAITHOUGHTS Scapegoat, and Lamb of God Pastor Robert Klonowski The Gospel lesson last Sunday was Luke 8:26-39. It’s the story of the Gerasene demoniac. The story is about something that is all-too-typically and all-too-tragically human. At the end of it, when the people heard how the one – the one! That guy! – who had been possessed by demons was now healed, the people asked Jesus to leave them, for “they were seized with great fear.” What was there to be so afraid about? Where there is fear, there is a human tendency called sin, that tempts us to locate the problem – failure; brokenness; sin; evil; the demonic – in the other. Surely there is nothing as bad as that in my soul! Other people are racist, but not me; God knows that I’m not like that!; let me find someone else who is surely at fault. This is the power of the archetypal story of the scapegoat, the one upon whom the sins of the community are placed, who is then run out of town, or sacrificed. Get out of here, Jesus!, the Gerasene people say, because if you take away our scapegoat then we have no one to blame but …. What the Gerasenes did to this guy, we do it, too, to others; it’s a powerful, archetypal human way. When we suffer failure, we look for who to blame. Can we build a society … a church … your household … such that we do not blame the other? In which we take responsibility for our own damn stuff (and I use the word “damn” deliberately there). It’s a scary prospect – the Gerasenes were right to be afraid! – but it’s made possible enough when Jesus is invited onto the scene. For that’s what Jesus does, in the country of the Gerasenes, and in the whole story of Jesus’ life, if you think about it. His life is to break the scapegoat dynamic once and for all. He does it by willingly taking on himself the scapegoat role. You need an “other” to blame? I am that other, he says. Lamb of God who takes upon himself the sins of the world. Look for me with the Gerasene man infused with demons, for I am that “other” guy. Look for me among those who suffer, for my own mangled body will fit right in; I am that other. Look for me in the black experience in America, in all its Calvary-sized suffering and all its resilient Resurrection strength and then in its victory, and don’t be surprised!; don’t be surprised to find me – Jesus! – so strong in what you have called “other.” Look for me in your Muslim sister or your Muslim brother, for je suis Malala. I am Malala. Look for me in the immigrant experience, in the refugee, the sojourner among you, for what have I ever been other than refugee myself, sojourner among you? He breaks the scapegoat dynamic once and for all. He does it by willingly taking on himself the scapegoat role. Lamb of God who takes upon himself the demonizing sin of this world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
