FAITHOUGHTS The Reach for Transcendence, and the Power of Community Pastor Klonowski Mary Wisniewski is the transportation reporter for the Tribune. Usually her stuff is about bridge lifts on the river downtown, or maybe the new construction project coming soon to an expressway near you. So I was startled to see her headline Monday: “Why I Still Go to Mass.” Her column this week was about being transported in an entirely different way. She’s Roman Catholic, but left Christianity when she was young. She was an atheist for a while, then studied Judaism as a way of faith, and even tried practicing Buddhism. But she came back. Why? “Every week [the church] invites me into a conversation about the power of love and the search for peace, and the necessity of going beyond our individual needs …. It is a call to community and sharing, in a world that tries to focus our attention on selfishness and possessions and tribalism.” Committing herself to regular worship again, she writes, “sometimes I engage with the Gospel and the scriptures on an intellectual level – sometimes I just sit there, numbed by the events of the week, and appreciate both the physical and the liturgical architecture.” Being in worship “is like being inside a sonnet – though what’s inside changes, the structure stays the same. It’s comforting to know the same ritual, the same structure, is being repeated … in hundreds of languages across the world.” She loves the mundane things about the church, too; the blood drives and doughnuts and fund-raisers and the jokes about pumpkin spice-flavored Holy Communion. “I get to look at babies, bouncing to the music. I get to sing with my daughter. These things, too, are church.” She ends with this: “People have asked me how I, as a progressive and feminist, can stay in the church with all its problems. I stay for the same reason I stay in the United States, whose leaders have been guilty of crimes throughout the decades. It is beautiful …. It is my home. Why should I let some ignorant old guys keep it for themselves? Unless I am actually driven out, bell, book and candle, I’ll stay, and work for peace.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Healing service this Sunday We celebrate St. Luke, the Evangelist and “beloved physician,” with a special healing service, including hymns and prayers related to health and wholeness, laying on of hands and anointing with oil. We will also pray for and bless those who work and serve in healthcare professions, and bless prayer shawls and quilts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
