FAITHOUGHTS Regeneration Deb Burnet These days, my work in medical education is mostly directed toward faculty development. I help my peers do their work better and move into leadership roles. Less often, I spend time teaching medical students and residents who are learning to become doctors. And then, every once in a while, there is an undergraduate student who asks to ‘shadow’ me to learn what it’s like to be a doctor. That was Ethan. Ethan is a college student who is persistent and assertive in the best sense, something like the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 who keeps asking Jesus to heal her daughter. Ethan found me and asked to spend time with me and I agreed, and he met me in clinic on Monday morning. Now, when I teach resident physicians, we consider which would be the best drug for a particular patients’ high blood pressure, given the patient’s other medical conditions. When I teach medical students, I ask them to tell me what they think is causing the patient’s chest pain. But here I was teaching a teen-ager who is just beginning to think about being a doctor. Here I was starting from scratch. We looked at the schedule for the morning – ten patients, mostly older women. Ethan asked me if most of my patients come to see me for a regular check-up. I explained that most people come to see me for help managing multiple medical conditions such as diabetes and arthritis. But, what do you know?, the first patient was a woman with no medical problems who came in for a check-up! I talked to her about recommended screenings and staying healthy, and that helped Ethan learn the foundations of preventive medicine. The next several folks were more typical, wrestling with weight management, stress, onset of diabetes, and various pains and problems. Our last patient was the cherry on top: a 95-year-old lady who still works daily as a secretary, and is very clear about what she does and doesn’t want from medicine! It couldn’t have been scripted better. Walking Ethan through the spectrum of medicine, I reflected on what each encounter meant to me. Telling Ethan what I love about each stage of medicine, I felt new wonder and grace in my work. Jesus was confronted again and again by the elder chief priests and scribes, who thought they knew best how everything worked. He told them, “Do you hear what these children are saying? Have you never read, ‘From the mouths of children you have ordained praise?'” (Matthew 21:16). I thank God for Ethan’s persistence! Deb Burnet is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she serves as a physician and a medical researcher.
