FAITHOUGHTS A Request Comes Our Way Pastor Klonowski A couple of weeks ago, Faith received a request from South Suburban PADS. PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) is the primary provider of shelter to homeless folk in the Southland. We know them because as many as 25 Faith folks volunteer, in one way or another, every second Sunday of the month, at the shelter housed at Flossmoor Community Church. PADS doesn’t have a place for one of the men’s shelters on Monday nights; the churches that hosted Mondays for the past two years are now using their buildings for other things, and they won’t host shelter any more. Would Faith consider it? We’ll consider it. There are lots of questions to be explored. Here’s a few: Is this a call from God to us? Well, that’s a question that’s always on the table for a community that calls itself Faith, isn’t it?! How would it be staffed? The staff is in place; this shelter just needs a Monday home. There are two site managers, and volunteers from The Emmaus Community Church in Chicago Heights, St. Paul’s in Homewood, and others. SS PADS has responsibility for staffing. What are the costs to Faith? Some of our property folks have been thinking/talking about it. We figure utility costs, and some marginal wear and tear on the building and heating systems. The big one is storage: Where can we put sleeping pads, blankets, pillows for guests? What’s the relationship between the shelter and the Faith community? This is a big question, in my mind. The current proposal is just to make the building available, but if we do this it should be more than a simple matter of landlord/tenant. It’ll work a lot better as a shared ministry, Faith and SS PADS. And, a shared ministry with the churches that are providing staffing! I’d hope that over time, Faith folks would join the volunteer crews, as needed. Those would be great relationships for us. Bottom line: Pray! I’ve been praying for two things, and I invite you to join me: 1) For God’s guidance as we scratch our heads and consider this significant thing, and 2) For a person from Faith who’d be willing to serve as leader/co-ordinator of the effort. I don’t think this works, without someone who’ll say, let’s do it. And come, on Sunday at noon, to hear more, and pray more, and raise more questions, for there are a lot more questions than I’ve raised here! I’ve been interviewing folks and digging up information, and I’d like to share what I’ve learned, and I’d like us to share with each other. Let’s get the buzz going about this in our community, with good open conversation and some good, healthy gossip! Talk. Pray. Seek God. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
