FAITH THOUGHTS PRAY-Whenever, Wherever, and However Carla Benard O Lord, hear my prayer O Lord, hear my prayer When I call, answer me O Lord, hear my prayer O Lord, hear my prayer Come and listen to me The verses are often a part of our Lenten worship. Certainly, the idea of prayer during Lent makes sense as we allow ourselves to go on Christ’s final and most important journey: the one that leads directly to the cross. Some people are very comfortable praying. They can pray at any time and always seem to have the “right” words. But for those who are not as comfortable praying, that is often the reason given; I don’t have the right words. I don’t know what to say. Sometimes people just take the easy way out, as in, “Pastor, will you lead us in prayer. The assumption seems to be that by virtue of the job, the pastor always has the “right words.” And yet throughout my life in this church and others, outside the prescribed form of the liturgical prayers, every pastor has prayed in a way that is wholly individual. Different styles, different vocabulary, different emotions. Not too surprising, as they have all been different people with their own individual relationship with God. A relationship that is in evidence in their prayers. Nope, it clearly isn’t a job title that makes prayer easier for pastors or those others among us who can pray without hesitation. Maybe, just maybe, it’s all about an understanding of the relationship between God and us. An understanding that in a relationship of such intimacy, the words really don’t matter. The Lenten journey we’ve begun puts the nature of that relationship in stark relief. We are the beneficiaries of a gift we don’t deserve. A breath-taking gift that can cause us to become speechless. But this gift was intended to do just the opposite: to free us from the paralysis of sin and certain death and to bring us to bold new life. Wow! So, how could this God, who knows all too well every single wart we try to hide, expect perfection from us when we speak to him? Why would He only listen if we use the “right words?” If the study of Scripture teaches us anything, it teaches us that in spite of all our all-too-obvious flaws, God is always right there waiting to answer, to come, and to listen when we call. I offer this poem to you as an incentive to pray confidently, regardless of the words you choose. Praying Mary Oliver It doesn’t have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don’t try to make them elaborate, this isn’t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. We’ll kick off Building Vision, our capital funding campaign, with an all-congregation information dinner on SUNDAY, MARCH 17, at noon. See the insert in today’s bulletin to sign up to help set up, or help clean up, or bring food!
