FAITHOUGHTS A Necessary Affirmation by Carla Benard Recently, six of our young people made public affirmation of their baptism and accepted the faith that had been accepted for them as children. The statements given by two of those young people were profound; I’m not sure they realize how profound. Austin Hewes spoke of an evolution of faith from thinking most of what was said in church to be a lot of “mumbo-jumbo” to actually beginning to understand during the two years of Confirmation instruction that there was actually something to all this stuff he’d been listening to (but perhaps not really hearing) for years. He read the story of Noah and in the end of the story found: hope that in the midst of the worst of times, God does not and will not forget or forsake us. A long, long way from mumbo-jumbo. Faith Kenshol spoke of the day as a time to be ready to claim her faith. Perhaps more importantly, she spoke honestly about uncertainty and doubt. She asked whether she was in fact “ready.” But then she spoke of Peter, and Jesus’ unflinching faith in him, as an instrument in spite of boundless evidence of Peter’s un-readiness. She acknowledged God’s continuing to call the most unlikely of people to carry His message forward. She realized He could use her, too. As an adult, it is tempting to believe that the concerns of these young people are no longer ours. That we are so far along in an understanding of God and faith that doubt has, as they say, left the building. Honestly though, demands a different conclusion. Honestly speaking, we are probably just as confused and just as unsure as those brave young people. We don’t often admit to either feeling: we come to church, we join committees, we participate in Bible study. We are very busy doing what by any measure is God’s work on Earth. But if pressed to clearly explain our fundamental FAITH, could we do it without being too academic, or too theological, or too preachy? Could we be as honest as those young people and say that we’re not always sure we understand? Could we share our doubt? Are we who or what God is looking for ? Even if we are, we’re not so sure we’re ready to be found quite yet. So, to Austin and Faith I have this to say: thank you. Thank you for putting into words what it actually means to affirm vour faith. Thank you for being brave and honest – to admit that we might be afraid or uncertain, to admit we might not understand completely or might doubt what we hear. Even then, we have reason to hope and to trust that God will make us ready for what lies ahead. Carla Benard is a member of Faith.
