FAITHOUGHTS To Know and Be Known by Maria Arndt As a young girl, I would often stay Friday nights at my grandparents farm in Elizabethtown, IN. I would awake to the sound of the knocking of the furnace kicking on and the warm air moving up to hit first my face and then to knock the pull strap of the blind clicking against the window. The aroma of bacon wafting into the front bedroom lured me out of the warm bed. I then would walk a few feet and up one step into the kitchen. My slippers clicking on the brown speckled linoleum floor I would be met with the WCSI broadcaster Sam Simamaker announcing the scores of the high school football games from the radio blasting on the kitchen counter, immediately followed by the grain prices and the local Columbus morning news. I would take my seat to right of my grandfather, Dorance James Carson . DJ for short. But we all called him Pap. He would look up as way of a greeting, from a red hardbound journal that he was furiously scribbling into with notes about the weather and a few notes about the cattle he had fed that morning. My Grandmother, Esther Ann Carson, would be to my right pouring boiling water into my white with gold flowered Corelle tea cup and I would plop in 2 teaspoons of sugar and a teabag. We called her Mam Mam. She would smile at me and then return to the bacon sizzling in the pan. I put then split top honey wheat bread into the old silver toaster with the thick black cord and wait for it to pop up for us all. Pap would spread mustard on the toast and Mam Mam brought the crisp bacon to the table. He then would add the bacon on top. Mam Mam would scramble one egg for me in the bacon grease. The only way I will eat a scrambled egg to this day if I have a say. All of this transpired without a single word because no one would ever dare speak during the morning news broadcast. It was comfortable. It was known. It was loving. It was safe. It was happy. It was love. It was home. I feel this way at Faith. On Sunday, as I took my seat, I reflected quietly as others moved into the sanctuary. Garth had greeted me warmly with my bulletin and I read through the morning news. Pastor Klonowski smiled with the word he always says when I have the children’s message… READY? I say yes, but with a bit of apprehension in my belly. This past Sunday, November 10th, the most joyful & triumphant prelude came dancing from the organ; it calmed and uplifted me. The sounds from the choir in the loft promising that it was well with my soul, the prayers, hymns, liturgy and the sermon from the pulpit all speaking to me. All comforting me. All including me. It is comfortable. It is known. It is loving. It is safe. It is happy. It is love. It is home. It is Christ holding us and leading us. It is a family I can trust. It is worship. Maria Arndt is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she works as a kindergarten teacher.
