FAITHOUGHTS God, She by Deb Burnet For a long time I have held my peace, I have kept still and restrained myself; Now I will cry out like a woman in labor, I will gasp and pant. Isaiah 42:14 I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs, and will tear open the covering of their heart. Hosea 13:8 As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. Isaiah 66:13 God labors hard to bring about her new creation. God defends her children fiercely. God comforts her children when they suffer. Scripture includes so many female images of God. Why, then, do we almost always speak of ‘God, He…’ ? God, of course, is not really a man, or even a human being. Any descriptive language we use about God can only give us hints about what God is ‘like.’ We use ‘person’ language about God to emphasize both agency and intimacy. God the Father can be a beautiful and fitting image for God. When Jesus prayed ‘Abba, Father,’ he was teaching us how near and loving God is as our parent, not that God is male. In his teachings, Jesus uses a wonderful variety of images for God, including the woman searching diligently for her lost coin (Luke 15), the woman patiently baking bread (Matthew 13), & the birthing Spirit of God (John 3). When we forget this and speak without thinking of ‘God, He…’ in our songs, our prayers or our story telling, we limit God, and we limit our understanding, in harmful ways. Instead of an inspiring icon, we end up with an idol- a picture of God as a man (usually white, and old). Our young people (both girls and boys) mistakenly learn that men are made in God’s image in ways that women will never be. This is a dangerous teaching in our society which still values and regards women as less than men. Does She-language for God sound jarring to you? That’s good! The Spirit of God is a wild thing, blowing where She will. Always waking us up from our complacency – in our lives, our church, and our world. Deb Burnet is a member of Faith.
