FAITHOUGHTS Where Two or More are Gathered… by Carla Benard I love my small group Bible study. Many of you read that and probably said, “yeah, I know!” I don’t say that as the chair of Stewardship, or the person who will continue to bang the drum for adult learning in a faith community. It’s not about knowing any more than the person sitting next to me on Saturday morning, because I don’t. I love that group in all its various configurations because all are willing to be vulnerable, challenged, challenging, compassionate, and supportive. We have wrestled with the current book, I Believe. We have agreed with some of it, disagreed with some of it, and been confused by some of it. We keep looking for God in all of it. We help each other through the rough spots and often come to surprising clarity. We laugh. We’re laughing in Bible study. It’s a gift.. Our current political realities, regardless of your individual leanings, are troublesome and downright gut wrenching . The nation is divided and people of faith are, too. It can feel like a ship without a rudder, headed for certain disaster. Small group Bible study helps me set a better course. As adults in a troubled world, we work week by week to understand those ancient words, to reconnect ourselves with the Creed as an important instrument of faith, to learn over and over again who God is and what God desires Most importantly, we want to recognize what God has given us as a means of dealing with all the world might throw at us. Our responsibilities as captains of that rudderless vessel are made clear: Love more, hate less. Extend a hand in greeting. Give what is needed when it is needed without hesitation. Accept the fact that we cannot fix it all, but that we must continue to fix whatever we can wherever we can. See God in everyone. That’s my “faith thought” right now. The world is hard and disheartening at times. I am so grateful not to have to figure it out alone. Carla Benard is a member of Faith. Phil Silhan Phil Silhan of our congregation died on July 21. Phil served 40 years (!!) as the organist at Faith, and for many of those years was the director of the adult and children’s choirs. She was a remarkable musician who regularly brought to our worship her own compositions, and who was known in the Chicago community as the lady who played Christmas tunes at the piano during the month of December at Midway Airport. She was a person of incredibly deep Christian faith who prayed regularly for the Faith community and for people in it. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 11, 11 am; a lunch in the church fellowship hall will follow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roof
We have raised the roof! Thanks be to God for planners, donors, and our workers – the re-roofing of the entire church building has been completed. This Sunday we will be worshiping again with the organ, and without that dumpster in the parking lot …. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Worship Planning Group
There’s a team of people who plan our contemporary worship services. We read the lessons and themes for the day, then plan music and other worship experiences for the Faith community. Your kind of thing? Join us! Tuesday, August 6, 1:30 pm, in the church conference room. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
