FAITHOUGHTS Not to Be Served, but to Serve by Pastor Klonowski In the last few years I’ve become a member of an exclusive club. My wife Deb became interested and then became very good in the sport of triathlon: swim, bike, run. The exclusive club into which that puts me is Triathlon Support Crew, a select society of dedicated, hand-picked, elite people whose job is to carry all the stuff. Wetsuit. Bike helmet. Three pairs of shoes. Wet towels. Just call me Burro Boy, I tell her. On race day, once the athletes swim away, we support types grab a second cup of coffee and enjoy each other’s company. The spouses from the San Francisco Triathlon Club sport matching T-shirts: “Tri Sherpa.” My favorite T-shirt is a young guy from Philadelphia, pushing a stroller with a 9-month-old: “I deserve first place, because I survived my wife’s training schedule.” I walked right up to that guy and said: “You are wearing my shirt, man.” There are lots of places in my life where I serve as a leader. Certainly there’s Sunday morning worship. And a pastor is a leader in a Christian community in a lot of other, different ways. In the triathlon world I serve as a servant. Nobody looks for me, and nobody is really interested in me; what everyone’s interested in is, how did your wife do? We all have places of service in our lives, and places like that are important and to be treasured. There’s something right about the place of service; it helps us to remember and value that our Lord was not one who counted equality with God as something to be grasped, but instead emptied himself and took the form of a servant. (Philippians 2:7) The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, says Jesus. (Matthew 20:28) There’s a holy, a Christ-like lesson to be learned there. I thought of this again when I got my volunteer assignment for the “Hidden Gem” Half-Marathon, to be run – right past my house! – in Flossmoor on September 7. I used to run these things myself, back in the day, benefiting from the volunteer efforts of many, so for my hometown run I should give back, right? When they asked which of the volunteer jobs I wanted, I told them put me anywhere, because that’s what service is, right? So they gave me a job that has me in a room in the Village Hall during the race, kind of coordinating some of the things that have to get done. Which means, I suddenly realized, that I don’t even get to see the runners. Shoot. But there’s a lesson there for me in my disappointment. The opportunity for service? That is something to be treasured. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Phil Silhan Phil Silhan of our congregation died July 21. Phil served for 40 years as the organist at Faith and many years as the director of choirs. She was a remarkable musician who regularly brought to our worship her own compositions too. She played Christmas tunes on the piano at Midway Airport each December. A memorial service is scheduled this Saturday, August 17 at 11am; lunch in the fellowship hall will follow ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
