FAITHOUGHTS Savor the Moment by Sarah Cutcliffe It is officially the end of August. Most of our schools are back in session this week. We have plans for Labor Day weekend and I am even planning Ole’s October birthday party. Everywhere we go we are being told that it is fall and time to speed ahead into a new season. I am the biggest offender of looking toward to future too much. I am a planner and like to know what to expect in the coming day, week, month and year. Beyond that we (Robbie and I) plan for our financial future for the next several decades. We have hopes and dreams for us and our loved ones and we often set goals to achieve them. All that planning for the future is important but it takes a TON of energy and headspace. Matthew 6:34 reminds us, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” I like the overall message of this passage but I do try to give it an optimistic spin when I read it. Instead of focusing on the trouble of each day what if we truly focus on the joy of each day and not what is to come? Practicing gratitude requires the ability to live in the now and focus on the gifts in each moment. How do we actually do this? For our family, this looks like going to the swimming pool as much as possible before Labor Day. It means grilling chicken outside and taking walks despite busy schedules in the coming weeks. We are going to wear sandals and bathing suits and listen to cicadas as long as the sing in the evenings. We are going to focus on the gift of summer as long as it is here. As we do this, we will send up quick prayers of thanks for the beauty of our day. Tomorrow we will do it again. How will you focus on the gifts of today and turn off the anxieties of tomorrow? High school trip presentation Sunday, August 25 This Sunday, August 25 chaperones and students who traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee for a mission work trip will be presenting in worship. Come, hear their stories and see photos of their week of experiences! Following worship plan to stay for an ice cream social. Even if it’s closer to breakfast time, ice cream is always good, right? Cereal and other toppings will be available. Back to School Sunday, September 8! Beginning at 9:30am, come outside for the fun. A great kick off to Sunday school will include a bounce house, face painting, snacks, and other activities. Groups will have information and sign ups about what’s coming up this fall and winter.
