FAITHOUGHTS
What I read this summer Pastor Amy Wiegert The first weeks of school often involves questions like “what did you do this summer?” My high school history teacher asked “I don’t care what you did, actually. But tell me: What did you read this summer?” So in that vein, I offer this:
* Michelle Obama’s Becoming I enjoyed her Chicago stories and her take on the last 15 years. I have extra copies and I’m happy to share.
* Dear Church: A Love Letter From a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US by Lenny Duncan Formerly incarcerated and homeless, and an unlikely ELCA pastor, Lenny Duncan gets straight to the heart and calls us to new worlds of crossing racial lines individually and communally. I have extra copies and I’m happy to share.
* Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A favorite read for me. It gives me a glimpse of what life was probably like for the first generation of my family on Iowa farms, and serves as a reminder call my extended family and ask all of my farming questions.
* The book of John – In 2020, most of our Sunday’s Gospel lessons will come from John.
Next on my list:
* Yoga for Beginners by Cory Martin. In preparation for the women’s retreat Saturday, November 2, I’m making my way (slowly) through some yoga stretches and poses. Rev. Rachel Bass Gunnewig leads us.
* The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters by Priya Parker. She writes about our intentionality (or lack of it) in spending time with others. Conversations and connections are crucial to our well being, and to the well being of communities and the world. She uses research, interviews, and relationships to explain how important it is to be intentional about deep relationships and how our worlds expand for the better when we get to know new folks.
* David McCullough’s The Wright Brothers. After a trip to the North Carolina coast and the Wright Brothers National Memorial, how could I not read up on them? Also, I’m learning for the first time how important their sister Katharine was to their story and endeavors. What are you reading these days? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday Worship Schedule CHANGE! Beginning Sunday, September 8 (Sunday School Rally Day!), we begin again our schedule of two worship services. But the times will be a little different:
* 8:30 Worship * 9:45 Christian Education (Sunday School, Confirmation, HS Youth, adult groups)
* 11:00 Worship We’ll start the schedule a little later in the morning than we have in previous years, and we’ll shorten the later worship service, to accommodate families with young children. Out by noon, promise! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back to School Sunday, September 8! As we resume education hour, worship times will move again to two services on Sunday, September 8. Beginning at 9:30am, come outside for the fun. A great kick off to Sunday school will include a bounce house, face painting, snacks, and other activities. Groups will have information and sign ups about what’s coming up this fall and winter. Invite a neighbor, invite a friend, plan to join us! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
