FAITHOUGHTS Private Roads by Carla Benard While out walking while on vacation, I was met by a woman who looked at me closely, didn’t recognize me, and told me emphatically, “You’re not supposed to be walking here, this is a private road. I apologized and reversed course quickly, but the experience left me puzzled & a bit out of sorts. What kind of threat did I represent? A sweaty, older woman with nothing in her hands just walking through a neighborhood in order to maintain some level of fitness. Many of the homes on said road aren’t even inhabited every day; they were lakefront vacation homes in Door County. So, why the need for private roads? Who do they keep out, and who do they let in on these private roads? It’s stayed with me, and I will admit to drawing some negative conclusions. A quick and a defensive response is “that’s not how I am or we are. I live in an integrated community, my children go to integrated schools, our church is diverse, I have friends of all races and creeds. I do not live on a ‘private road.'” All good and all a step in the right direction. But, it is about more than just us, I fear. To limit access to medical care of any kind is to create a private road. The privileged can traverse it and get what they need. The rest…. To see people fleeing poverty and danger turned back or detained indefinitely, especially when most of them happen to be people of color, is to create a private road, one that seems to be open only to those who are white, or wealthy. To create rules that block the ability of poor , sick , elderly people to get food…. That too, is to create a private road. To maintain a system of economic disparity that disenfranchises primarily people of color is yet another private road. There is no reading of the Gospel that endorses the concept of “private roads.” In actual fact, the roads Jesus trod were anything but private. They were peopled by the totality of humanity: rich and poor, sick and well, insiders and outsiders, those who believed and wanted to hear more, as well as those who saw him as a threat and worked to bring him down. But, that was where he lived and worked Is it possible to open these roads to everyone? Jesus certainly thought so and provided the blueprint for such a project. Our challenge is to become the engineers that make it happen. Carla Benard is a member of Faith. After a career as a high school English teacher she is now enjoying retirement.
