FAITHOUGHTS Anathoth Pastor Robert Klonowski In my devotional reading of the Bible these days I am slogging my way through the book of the prophet Jeremiah. Longest book of the Bible, and not the kind of thing that starts your day with a cheerful word. Jeremiah is trying to make sense of tragedy, trying to say an honest word when the world as he and his people know it is coming to an end. “My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick …. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?” That’s Jeremiah 8. I’ve never much liked how much time and effort Jeremiah plows into blaming the people for their folly, for the sins of the nation that have led to Jerusalem’s dilemma and imminent demise. Well, yeah, I want to tell him, God’s people mess up, and the sin is serious and deep. But how many pages of your book do you want to spend, just assigning the blame? But there comes an important turn in the middle of the book, in which Jerusalem’s grief and pain is owned by the prophet himself: “Hark, the cry of my poor people …. Is the Lord not in Zion? … For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt, I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me.” Oh, now you’re talking, Jeremiah, I say. Instead of the who’s-to-blame game, now there’s the sense that in the grief and in the pain we are in this, together. And in the mysterious way of God’s prophets, God’s own voice speaks there through Jeremiah. God is hurt, God mourns, alongside God’s people. That’s a healing word for all of us. And then in chapter 32, just as the invading armies are to conquer poor Jerusalem and the economy and political structures of Judah are about to collapse, there is the story of how Jeremiah … buys himself a plot of farmland, at Anathoth. I wonder if there is a more defiantly hope-filled gesture in all of human literature. At the moment of his people’s humiliation Jeremiah invests in the future. “Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.” I don’t know what threatening thing is just over the horizon for you, big and scary and heading this way. I can tell you the thing that is there for me. But in the face of destruction God’s people proclaim that the Lord is with us yet. I’m gonna live right here, in this world, with God at our side. Gonna claim this place of mine as God’s very own; gonna buy me a little plot of land and call it Anathoth. Houses and fields and vineyards shall again flourish in this place, by the grace of God. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
