FAITHOUGHTS The Holy Spirit by Sarah Cutcliffe Each October my husband travels to Florida for the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. Racers participate in an autocross race, a drag race and a car show. The catch is that the car’s budget is the year. This year my husband’s $2019 car is a 1980 AMC Spirit. He & his friend have put a ton of work into it and the car has been central to many conversations in the last weeks. The car’s nickname “Holy Spirit” has been thrown around and this generated some great discussions. What is the Holy Spirit and how do we identify It? How do we actively listen to the Spirit? Many of you participated in a recent bible study that used In Search of Belief by Sister Joan Chittister. My conversations with Robbie pushed me to seek out the chapter in that book that focuses on the Holy Spirit and her thoughts resonate so deeply. She makes the argument that today’s conversation about the Holy Spirit should not be what is it, but who is the Holy Spirit. She contends that despite the Spirit being, “a wild thing, breathing where it will, moving as it pleases.” The Church narrowly defines the Spirit and often ignores its guidance when it doesn’t come from ordained people. But the Spirit lives in all of us pushing us toward living out our Christian beliefs. The Spirit drives us all to put our energy out in the world. This made me think a lot about how I feel the Holy Spirit move me. I identified that when I think to myself, “Is this crazy? Can I actually pull this off?” I am sure that is when the Spirit is pushing me. If I feel that a new project or commitment is too complicated or requires too much energy but is the right thing to do, that is the Holy Spirit thrusting me forward. It is scary to take the leap in those situations but those are generally the experiences that bring about the most growth and touch the most lives. In our coming church season we will focus on stewardship. I suspect many of you will feel those overwhelming feelings when contemplating how to give your gifts. Listen to the Spirit and trust God. The Spirit within you is a reason our church and God’s Church continue to radiate love into the world. Sarah Cutcliffe is a member of Faith. Sunday school news: Kids Feeding Kids Lorene Dudle came to talk to with the kids about her passion, kids feeding kids. She mentioned how kids can do big things too. So, the challenge to the Sunday school children (from now until November) is to bring in money or canned/ boxed goods to give to kids that need food. Please talk with your child about it! They’ve got some great ideas about how they can help. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
