FAITHOUGHTS Untested Words by Stuart Kurtz The Christianity that I know interprets the relationship between God and humanity through the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When John sent his disciples to ask Jesus who he was, Jesus answered, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them.” When I think of my congregation, Faith, I see a church of Jesus Christ. We meet to worship, to grow and be nurtured in our faith, to be equipped for ministry. People who suffer from addiction are supported. The homeless are sheltered. People are embraced whom the larger society rejects. But when I hear of Christianity in the public sphere, I often hear something very different. I don’t want to amplify those dissonant voices here, nor do I need to. We’ve all heard them. “Christians believe,” followed by something you and I don’t believe. And we hear the challenge that’s all but explicit in those words, that by not believing something that divides us, or marginalizes some of us, we are not truly Christian. Test the words before you test yourself: Is the love of God, of Jesus, present in those words? Is that love reflected in the challenge to you? Is there a place in the conversation where you can speak if your Christian faith takes you somewhere very different? If your answers are “no,” the challenge is not authentic. Friends, hold on to your faith! Be wary of the pull of secular society, and don’t let it pull you away from the faith. But be wary too of those who claim to speak for Christianity, and don’t let their untested words push you away! Stuart Kurtz is a member of Faith. In his daily ministry he is a teacher of computer science at the University of Chicago. He’s at stuart@cs.uchicago.edu [mailto:stuart@cs.uchicago.edu]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sharon Stancik Memorial Service Sharon Stancik of our Faith community died on Wednesday, September 11. Sharon struggled with illness for many years, and she lived through those years with great courage. She was a member of the sewing ministry at Faith, she was an organizer and a cleaner of the church kitchen, and contributed to our congregation’s life in many other ways. Please remember in prayer her husband John, and children Derek, Darlene, and Michelle. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, October 26, at 10 a.m., at Faith. Following the service the community is invited to a celebratory lunch in the gym. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
